1 oz. SAE for a loaf of bread

I was at the local supermarket and a young lady spent a SAE for a loaf of bread. I was there and told the cashier I would give her a dollar for it, she was more than happy to get that big coin out of her drawer, no spaces in the drawer designated for SAE's. What do you think of that?

The ignorance of the masses is amazing. It was either (a) stolen or (b) given as a gift, and the girl thought of it as no more than a "silver dollar". "It says one dollar on it, right?"

The cashier was no wiser. If you run into such a situation, it is best to remove those big ugly coins from their possession, just to avoid confusion. It is also a stress reliever, as they no longer have to think about "what do I do with this thing???" :confused_ma:

I think it was a great score for you. On the flip side, it's sad the other 2 parties (buyer and cashier) are so uninformed. :applause_

In the city I work in, a guy went to a gas station with a $50 gold eagle and bought $4 worth of candy and wanted his $46 in change. Unfortunately, the cashier was pretty smart. He put $50 in FRN's in the drawer and pocketed the coin.

Yes, I know it was probably stolen. Sucks for the victim, but MAN I wish I could have got that coin.

Another instance at a different gas station some kids spent $10 in 90% silver quarters from a mint tube. I was able to get these for face from the cashier..... :bull-buddy-icon:

That is awesome! What condition is the SAE in?

I does seem that even the dimmest of people would be able to look at a SAE and suspect that they were holding on to something of value. I carry one with me every day and when I show it to people, there is a definite reaction.

About 10 years back at a grocery store, I was behind a 10 year-old +/- and watched as he pulled out a handful of 90% to pay for a candy purchase. I ended up with all the 90%. He had to have stolen it from a family member but I figured that it would end up spent someplace. A couple of years later, it was stolen from me. Karma I guess.

I look forward to the day when I can trade a silver mercury dime for a loaf of bread, but not a whole silver "dollar." :banghead::banghead:

When I was at that age of around 10 my grandmother gave all the grandchildren rolls of mercury dimes for Christmas. My mother was telling me that I should keep them, but since they were mine, I spent them. Valuable lesson to learn 17 years or so later.

I might have been that kid spending that money in that line, but it was not stolen for sure. I kind of wish my parents would have kept the dimes and not let me spend them, but it would be impossible to tell me as a 10 year old that the roll of dimes is not mine and not to be spent. Once they were pulled out of the bag as a gift to me, it was my money and my parents honored that, which I respect.

I did an "awareness"experiment a while back. Ordered a pizza for delivery and waited.

The delivery guy showed up and I asked him in. The bill was $16 or so. I had a $20 bill on the table and 3 SAE's next to the 20. Told him to take his pick and he could keep the change. He took the $20 bill.

I'd hate to think bread would be that high then........... :D

Silver ought to be 50 FRNs/oz right now, so a dime would be about 0.0723 x 50 = 3.61 FRNs...seems a bit steep for plain ole loaf bread.

In fact, dimes are worth 1.04 FRN now......if you'll take "day old" bread, I'll sell it to you for a silver dime a loaf...........ahahahahaaaaa

We actually have a French bakery that sell bread for more than a spot ounce of silver ($A16+)
Its called Victoire and its located in the suburb of Balmain in Sydney.
Every Saturday they baked a "special loaf" that they charge $A19 each.
I bought a half loaf once to see what was so special....... it wasn't:confused_ma:
